Donations!
Parents are a great resource in providing valuable donations to their child's education. I will be asking for monthly donations from the parents, community and anyone else who may be a valuable resource to our class. For items not donated, I will either buy those items or our class will go without it. Usually I end up buying it, though! That's why we're hoping for some great donations, fundraisers and support from all to help make this a great year! Remember, the gift of your time is also very valuable to us- parents can contact Ms. Le for a form on how to donate time as a guest reader, to grade papers, to type up student drafts, to join a field trip to chaperone a few students, to help out during parties, etc. Thank you so much for your donations and gifts of time!
Our Giving Tree!
The book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein inspired this idea for me a few years ago. I read this book to the students and we discussed the idea of a tree so loving, so thoughtful and so wonderful. We wanted to grow a tree like this in front of our class so that passersby (mainly our parents) may shed a quick glance to see if any of the apples on the trees represent any sort of donation that they could make to our class. Why? These items make our projects shine, make our class more efficient, and a much happier place. Really! The students beam with joy knowing that the glittery pens that were donated by their family helped us to create glitzy report covers, etc.
Piggy Penny Drive!
This is a new idea that came up to me recently. Some students kept bringing in pennies and nickels to class and wanted to donate it to our class for whatever reason. I didn't know what to do with it so I told them to put it in the piggy bank on my desk (as I collect pigs to display). This movement has now led to a piggy penny drive! The students can help me decide what to do with this money once we cash it in at one of those Coinstar machines. Perhaps this will buy us some plants for our garden, a new class pet, or ____________! The students will democratically vote to see what wins.
Birthday Goodie Bags!
What fun! This year, in the hopes to save valuable teaching minutes, we have decided to dedicate one day per month (sometimes falling on a student's real birthday) to have a monthly birthday party. During this 30 minute or less party, the students that have a birthday that month are allowed to have treats(we are trying to stick to healthy food if possible) to eat outside and then each will get to read a birthday book to our class, pick a gift from the treasure chest (which has Klutz craft books and stuffed animals), and get to have either birthday letters from the class or a birthday card with everyone's signature on it. We will put all of this in a gigantic goodie bag filled with birthday stickers. For those birthdays that fall in July or August, we will celebrate these students in the month of June! Have a great birthday kids! We know this day is so special to you!
Fundraisers!
Our first school fundraiser starts on Sept.11th. This fundraiser includes a catalog filled with many items (a lot of them are pretty, decorative wrapping paper that can be sold to friends of the family and co-workers of parents. Please do not send your child out into the neighborhood to sell these items unless you know who you are selling the items to and only if you follow them.
